- Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis)
- European mantis (Mantis religiosa)
- Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina)
- Giant Asian mantis (Hierodula membranacea)
When choosing a praying mantis, be sure to select a healthy specimen that is free of any visible injuries or parasites. You should also choose a mantis that is appropriate for the size of your enclosure.
Housing Your Praying Mantis
Praying mantises require a secure and spacious enclosure that provides them with plenty of room to move around and hunt. The enclosure should be at least twice as long and twice as wide as the mantis itself.
The enclosure should be well-ventilated and have a lid to prevent the mantis from escaping. You can use a variety of materials to create an enclosure, such as a glass or plastic terrarium, a mesh cage, or a 5-gallon bucket with holes drilled in the lid.
The enclosure should be furnished with a variety of items, such as:
- A hiding place, such as a piece of bark or a small plant
- A perch, such as a stick or a branch
- A water dish
- A source of live food, such as crickets or mealworms
Feeding Your Praying Mantis
Praying mantises are voracious predators that will eat a variety of live insects. The best way to feed your mantis is to offer them a variety of insects that are appropriate for their size.
Some good choices for food include:
- Crickets
- Mealworms
- Flies
- Moths
- Butterflies
You should feed your mantis every 1-2 days. The amount of food you give them will depend on their size and appetite.
Watering Your Praying Mantis
Praying mantises do not drink water like other insects. They absorb water from the air and from the food they eat.
However, it is important to provide your mantis with a water dish. This will allow them to bathe and to regulate their body temperature.
Temperature and Humidity
Praying mantises require a warm and humid environment to thrive. The ideal temperature for most species is between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit.
The humidity should be between 40-60%. You can increase the humidity in the enclosure by misting it with water several times a day.
Mating and Reproduction
Praying mantises are sexually dimorphic, meaning that males and females look different. Males are typically smaller and slimmer than females.
Praying mantises mate in the fall. The male will approach the female and perform a series of courtship behaviors. If the female is receptive, she will allow the male to mate with her.
The female will lay an egg case, or ootheca, a few weeks after mating. The ootheca will contain up to 200 eggs.
The eggs will hatch in the spring. The nymphs will look like small adults. They will go through several molts before reaching their adult size.
Common Health Problems
Praying mantises are relatively hardy insects, but they can be susceptible to a variety of health problems, including:
- Dehydration
- Malnutrition
- Parasites
- Bacterial infections
- Fungal infections
It is important to take your mantis to a veterinarian if you suspect that it is sick.
Praying mantises are fascinating and beneficial insects that can make great pets. With the right care, you can provide a healthy and enriching environment for your mantis to thrive.
