ISIS: A History by Fawaz Gerges is the definitive account of the rise, reign, and fall of the Islamic State. Drawing on exclusive interviews with ISIS leaders, fighters, and defectors, Gerges provides an unprecedented look into the inner workings of the terrorist organization.
Gerges traces the origins of ISIS to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. He argues that the invasion created a power vacuum that allowed ISIS to flourish. Gerges also examines the role of social media in the rise of ISIS. He shows how ISIS used social media to spread its propaganda and recruit new members.
At the height of its power, ISIS controlled large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. Gerges describes the brutality of ISIS's rule. He tells the stories of victims of ISIS's violence, including those who were executed, enslaved, or tortured.
In 2017, ISIS was defeated by a US-led coalition. Gerges examines the factors that led to ISIS's defeat. He argues that the defeat of ISIS was a major victory in the fight against terrorism. However, Gerges also warns that the threat of ISIS is not over. He argues that the conditions that allowed ISIS to rise are still present in the Middle East. Gerges concludes by calling for a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of terrorism.
ISIS: A History is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the rise, reign, and fall of the Islamic State. Gerges's book is a comprehensive and authoritative account of one of the most important events of our time.
