Early Life and Career

Hosea Williams was born on January 31, 1926, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of sharecroppers, and he grew up in poverty. Williams attended Morehouse College, where he studied sociology and religion. After graduating from Morehouse, Williams worked as a social worker and a minister.

In 1957, Williams joined the SCLC. He quickly became one of King's most trusted lieutenants. Williams was a key organizer of the Birmingham campaign in 1963, which was a major turning point in the civil rights movement. Williams was also a participant in the Selma-to-Montgomery march in 1965, which helped to secure passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Later Career and Legacy

After King's assassination in 1968, Williams became the national president of the SCLC. He continued to lead the organization for many years, and he remained a vocal advocate for civil rights and social justice.

Williams died on November 16, 2000. He was 74 years old. He is remembered as one of the most important civil rights leaders of the 20th century.

Williams's Legacy of Defiance and Protest

Hosea Williams was a fearless advocate for justice and equality. He was willing to risk his life to fight for what he believed in. Williams's legacy of defiance and protest continues to inspire activists today.

Here are some of Williams's most famous quotes:

  • "I'm not afraid of anybody. I'm not afraid of the Ku Klux Klan. I'm not afraid of the police. I'm not afraid of the FBI. I'm not afraid of the CIA. I'm not afraid of the Mafia. I'm not afraid of the government. I'm not afraid of anybody."
  • "We're not going to let them turn us around. We're not going to let them stop us. We're going to keep fighting until we win."
  • "We're going to overcome, someday. We're going to overcome."

Williams's words are a reminder that we must never give up fighting for what we believe in. He showed us that even the smallest person can make a difference in the world.
