He attended The Judd School in Tonbridge, Kent, and then went on to study mechanical engineering at the University of Leeds.

After graduating from university, Adrian Shooter joined British Railways in 1957 as a graduate trainee. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1977.

Career at British Railways

During his time at British Railways, Adrian Shooter was responsible for a number of major innovations, including the development of the High Speed Train (HST) and the Advanced Passenger Train (APT). He also played a key role in the electrification of the West Coast Main Line and the of new signalling systems.

The HST was a revolutionary train that was introduced in 1976. It was the first train in the world to be powered by a gas turbine engine and it set a new world speed record for a diesel-powered train. The HST was a huge success and it remains in service today.

The APT was a more ambitious project that was designed to be the world's fastest train. However, the APT was plagued by technical problems and it was never put into service. Despite its failure, the APT was an important milestone in the development of high-speed rail travel.

Adrian Shooter also played a key role in the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. This project was completed in 1974 and it significantly reduced journey times between London and the major cities of the north-west of England.
